If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be in prison, the San Quentin online slot gives you a glimpse into the lifestyle. This game isn’t for everyone, but if you want to explore your dangerous side, it might be perfect for you.

As most players already know, San Quentin is among the largest, oldest and most high profile prisons in California. It’s been operating since 1852, and is the only prison in California where the death penalty is carried out. Since 2001 it has had the distinction of being the Western Hemisphere’s largest death penalty prison

Graphics & Symbols

Not surprisingly, this slot is set on the grounds of the prison it was named for. Behind the reels you’ll see a barbed wire fence and concrete wall. Guard towers and surveillance cameras are also pictured, letting players know they are being watched like an inmate.

Look at the bottom and top of the reels and you will see empty positions (called Enhancer Cells,) designed to depict unused prison cells. These come in to play later in the game. To the right of the reels are three wild symbols, represented by a police badge. An symbol of the guard towers is used as the game’s scatter.

The stars of the game are five of the prison’s inmates, each of which appears as a symbol on the reels. The inmates names are:

  • Beefy Dick
  • Crazy Joe
  • Loco Luis
  • Biker Bill
  • Heinrich the Third

However, these aren’t the only symbols on the reels. Others represent items prisoners generally have, including rolls of toilet paper, bar soap, handcuffs, lighters and objects typically used as weapons.

In addition to the standard wild symbol mentioned above, the game also has a Split Wild. These are unique symbols because they take the symbols directly under and directly over them and split the values of those symbols.

Bonus Features

Like any good slot, San Quentin has bonus features built in. For example, three or more of the watch tower scatter symbols on the reels at once activates the Lockdown Spins bonus.

The Enhancer Cell associated with the reel that contains the scatter symbols are opened for use during free spins. During those free spins you may get more scatters landing on the reels. If this happens, those scatters are transformed into wild symbols and more Enhancer Cells are opened.

How many free spins you actually get varies every time you trigger the bonus. Any Enhancer Cell that is open at the time carries a certain number of free spins. The number of free spins in each Enhanced Cell is added together to determine your free spin count.

After the game has determined how many free spins you get it will randomly choose one of the character symbols and attach a multiplier to it. When the chosen character appears on the reels you’ll win more money.

Jumping wilds are another aspect of the free spin bonus you should be familiar with. These are special symbols that take the place of the regular symbols on the reels. They can also move to various positions, sometimes taking a multiplier with them.

This is another point in the game where it is important to pay attention. If, during free spins, there is a split symbol on a reel as the same time as a wild symbol, the value of the multiplier is automatically doubled. Unlike other slots, this doesn’t mean that your winnings are doubled as a result. What it does mean is that the amount of wild symbols on the reels are doubled.

Feature Buy Option

If you don’t have the time or patience to wait for the free spins bonus to be triggered, you can use the feature buy option. This lets you cut to the chase and play your free spins. The only catch is that the feature buy will cost you, depending on how many scatter symbols you’d want.

For example, you could get three scatter symbols to unlock the bonus, or you could purchase three scatter symbols to unlock the bonus. Buying three scatter symbols will cost you 100 times your bet. Buying four scatter symbols will cost you 200 times your bet, but if you buy five scatter symbols, it costs 2,000 times your bet. When you purchase three, four, or five scatter symbols you also get one, two, or three jumping wilds too.

San Quentin is not your typical slot machine. But then again, it was never meant to be. There is some controversy surrounding the game, because many people feel that a prison is not a subject to be taken lightly.

But for those who don’t mind, or even like, edgier slots, San Quentin has something to offer. The game could have been created with a dark, serious mood, but instead, the cartoon like graphics take the edge off of the theme.

This is a way for players to safely explore what life is like in prison. Many players will say the game is a punishment in some way, because it takes many spins of the reels to walk away with any big winnings.

No Limit City, the software company behind San Quentin, released a similar game called Punk Rocker. The two slots have a lot in common, including certain bonus features and even the layout of the game screen.

Another slot, released by the same provider, similar to San Quentin, is East Coast vs West Coast, a controversial gang-themed game. For players who are looking for a slightly less darkly themed slot, this one fits the bill.
